Assessing Tertiary Turkish EFL Learners’ Pragmatic Competence Regarding Speech Acts and Conversational Implicatures

Pragmatic competence is an indispensable component of communicative competence, which plays essential role in human communication. When individual communicatively competent, he/she can carry out effective conversation social situations. Therefore, pragmatic establishes a compelling factor English language learning as it permits second/foreign learners to successful conversations real-life interactions outside the classroom atmosphere. The improvement foreign learners’ will strengthen their competence. purpose this paper assess comprehension conversational implicatures by using multiple-choice discourse test (MCDT) and performance completion (DCT). Through use quantitative analysis, 54 adult at C1 B2 levels proficiency defined Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) university Cyprus were tested on speech acts. EFL more MCDT regarding formulaic idiosyncratic features but received lower results DCT. As well testing level, study was also designed investigate difference between gender performances DCT MCDT. revealed that there no statistical significance male female respondents terms Based these results, teaching pragmatics classrooms portrays major aspect for sustainable environment. Thus, illustrates suggestions future research.
